Job Description

Griffith University acknowledges the people who are the traditional custodians of the land and pays respect to Elders, past and present, and extends that respect to other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Why Griffith?
At Griffith, you'll find a community that is built on our values. Ranked in the top 2% of universities world-wide, Griffith is well known for its excellence, culture and opportunity.

Teaching
As the recipient of more national teaching awards than any other university, Griffith is committed to the success of our students, ensuring that Griffith students graduate. We have the largest Indigenous student population of any Queensland university and dedicated services to support the success of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

Research
Griffith is committed to creating an environment that fosters the sharing of research, recognising and valuing Indigenous knowledges and supporting community empowerment through partnership.

Employment
Griffith has a strong commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment and career progression and is proudly in the top 5 universities nationwide for the largest number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander academic staff.

The School of Medicine and Dentistry strives to prepare the next generation of professionals and practitioners to tackle health and health care challenges in an ever-changing world. As a community, we are committed to building better health outcomes for all, and we seek to improve the health of all by delivering high-quality education, research for impact, and engagement with and for the communities we serve.

Our diverse student body benefits from the opportunity to study in state-of-the art facilities and can select from degrees and courses across a wide range of disciplines spanning dentistry and oral health, First Peoples Health, medicine, paramedicine, and public health.

As a community, we are committed to the highest standards of learning and teaching across our diverse academic programs and courses. These include undergraduate and postgraduate programs in first peoples health. Our focus is on producing graduates confident, competent and resilient to be agents for change and who, as health professionals and practitioners, will strive to improve health outcomes for the communities we all serve.

The First Peoples Health and Practice courses aim to prepare graduates across health professions to provide culturally safe health services to Australia's First Peoples. Pedagogical approaches that are led by First Peoples staff members and privileged First Peoples voices are fundamental when teaching this content. This responds to the notion that First Peoples' ways of knowing and teaching cannot be simulated by non-Indigenous teaching staff. The course content has been designed to meet the requirements of the professional body's accreditation and competency standards and codes of professional conduct to provide culturally safe care.

The Opportunity
The School of Medicine and Dentistry is seeking to recruit an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander academic for the position of Lecturer in First Peoples Health. We are particularly seeking candidates to support teaching and research in our First Peoples discipline. The ideal candidate will have expertise and an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories and cultures and the capability to work skilfully and purposefully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities in professional contexts. The role will contribute to a program of work embedding First Peoples’ perspectives and knowledge across the Health Group to enhance teaching, research, and engagement both internally and externally at Griffith University.

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake a range of duties and responsibilities aligned with a Lecturer Level B academic appointment which will include, but are not limited to:

  • Fostering an outstanding student experience and encouraging active participation and engagement in learning and teaching across the School's program and course offerings;
  • Continuously improving teaching practice through professional development and critical reflection informed by a range of evaluation approaches;
  • Informing the quality, innovation, currency and evidence-base of teaching and learning through scholarly activities, commitments and outputs;
  • Fostering innovation and a future-focused approach to support high-quality learning and teaching outcomes for students evidenced by technology-enhanced learning, problem-oriented, authentic learning and assessment practices;
  • Undertaking research that has the potential to achieve impact on policy and practice in the wider community; and
  • Providing academic leadership ensuring consistently high-quality experiences and outcomes are achieved for higher degree research (HDR) candidates.
