The Opportunity
 
The International and Group provides whole of government advice on ways to enhance the security and prosperity of all Australians. We coordinate and lead whole of government efforts to progress Australia’s national interests across the Government's national security and international policy priorities. 
 
The Group advises the Prime Minister on Australia’s international agenda, foreign policy, aid, defence and intelligence, and specialised international and security economic interests in close collaboration with colleagues across PM&C and other agencies. The Group supports the Prime Minister’s engagement with foreign leaders and international institutions and supports Cabinet’s consideration of international and security matters. 
 
Adviser roles are available across the Group’s divisions:
  • National Security Division
  • G20 and Trade Policy Division
  • International Division
  • Quad, AUKUS and Naval Shipbuilding Division
As an Adviser in the Group, you will be part of a team that is responsible for the development and implementation of policy and advice to the Prime Minister and senior officials within the Department. You will have the opportunity to be part of a highly skilled and experienced team that values initiative, respect and collaboration. The work is interesting and challenging, often fast-paced and complex, and requires a high degree of autonomy and professional skill. As a PM&C Officer, you will exercise initiative and judgment on complex policy problems, while operating at the heart of the decision making process across government. 
 
The roles are fast paced, challenging and varied. You will gain unparalleled insight into the development of strategic, security and foreign policy and unique exposure to the wider PM&C, APS and national security communities. 
 
You will work on a variety of issues and be part of a team that delivers on:
  • providing accurate, concise and timely advice to the Prime Minister on national security, international, defence, intelligence, economic and domestic security policies, taking account of the cross-cutting implications of decisions on both the Government’s international and domestic agenda;
  • convening internal and external stakeholders to ensure a whole of government approach to development and implementation of major policies and programs; 
  • preparing high quality briefings to support the Government's consideration of related policy, legislation, budgetary and topical issues;
  • work closely with other central agencies to build support, shape and prioritise significant policy proposals, including new spending proposals, to implement the Government’s agenda;
  • support the Prime Minister’s international bilateral and multilateral engagement, including with other international leaders;
  • preparing high quality briefings to support Cabinet, ministerial and senior official deliberations;
  • demonstrate public service professionalism and probity and adheres to the APS Values and Code of Conduct.

Eligibility
  • To be eligible for this position you must be an Australian Citizen. 
  • The occupant must be able to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 (Secret) level security clearance, or hold a current security clearance of an appropriate level.  Some roles in the group may require a higher security clearance.
  • The successful candidate will be required to be assessed through our pre-employment screening checks, such as an Australian Criminal History Check
