About the role

The Human Rights Team is a dynamic specialist team of 5 lawyers within the Civil Law Division at Legal Aid NSW which undertakes human rights and public interest casework. We represent disadvantaged clients in civil claims against the State, public agencies and other bodies, including intentional torts, discrimination complaints, breaches of privacy and various forms of administrative review. We manage strategic advocacy projects designed to achieve a systemic impact for our clients and contribute to policy and law reform opportunities that align with our casework. We also run advice clinics linked to our areas of practice including at Anti-Discrimination NSW, the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal and the Aboriginal Legal Service (Redfern).

About you

We are looking for a passionate and experienced lawyer who has worked closely with disadvantaged and vulnerable clients, preferably including Aboriginal people and young people.
You must have significant experience running litigation in both courts and tribunals, with a strong emphasis on intentional torts and anti-discrimination law, and excellent negotiation skills with experience in conciliation forums.
You must also have the demonstrated ability to manage a high-volume caseload as well as contribute to law reform and policy work. You will also have the capacity to contribute to the scoping, planning, implementation and evaluation of strategic projects.

This is an Aboriginal targeted recruitment. This means that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply. But it doesn’t mean that non-Aboriginal people can’t apply – we also welcome applications from anyone who is interested in the role.
