Job Description:

Summary: We are looking for someone who is passionate about improving outcomes for community to oversee and coordinate key projects and initiatives led by Victoria Legal Aid’s First Nations Services team.
 
  • Full-time ongoing position (part-time (0.8 FTE) considered)
  • Salary based on experience, range: $98,902 - $123,624 (pro rata) plus super
  • Up to $15,900 in salary packaging and hybrid WFH & office model

About the role:
The Senior Policy and Project Officer (SPPO) plays an important role in overseeing and coordinating strategic projects and activities within Victoria Legal Aid’s First Nations Services team. This position contributes to the improvement of service delivery to First Nations people, promoting cultural safety within Victoria Legal Aid (VLA)'s workplace and advancing partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.

As an SPPO, you'll work within our First Nations Services team to plan, design, and implement strategic projects aimed at improving service accessibility, cultural responsiveness, and quality for First Nations individuals. Additionally, you'll develop relationships with stakeholders in the legal assistance sector to strengthen our efforts in supporting First Nations communities and advocating for their rights, while also support development of strategies that reflect their needs and goals in our services.
 
This is a special measures role and only First Nations people are eligible to apply, as per the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.
 
This role is based at our Melbourne CBD office on Wurundjeri Country; however, let us know if you’d prefer to work at one of our other VLA offices across Victoria.
 
About you:
As our ideal candidate, you will possess:
  • Lived experience working collaboratively with First Nations communities, with an understanding of cultural norms, communication styles, and systemic racism within the legal system.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and meet strategic objectives.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills, capable of influencing and negotiating with individuals at all levels.
  • Demonstrated experience in driving service innovation and growth, including client-first approaches and evidence-based decision-making.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear and well-researched reports and lead program initiatives.
  • Tertiary qualification (or equivalent experience) in law, public policy, or related field (highly desirable).
