First Nations Impact Lead (Identified Role)

About the role
The First Nations Impact Lead plays a pivotal role in delivering Uniting’s commitment to long-term systemic change through our 10-Year First Nations People and Place Strategy. This position leads strategic initiatives that amplify First Nations voices and embed self-determination across innovation, advocacy, and thought leadership.
You will work in genuine partnership with communities, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs), and key stakeholders to design and scale First Nations-led solutions that deliver lasting social and systems impact.
Reporting to the Director, First Nations Strategy and Outcomes, and working closely with the Director of Customer, Risk and Governance, you will help translate bold aspirations into tangible outcomes across the following key action areas:
Your impact
Advocacy and Allyship
- Collaborate with the Advocacy and Media team to influence policy and build movements for change.
- Strengthen relationships with First Nations communities and government to support systems change.
- Support Uniting teams to partner with ACCOs, designing culturally led pathways for children and families.
- Co-design strategies to grow a strong, capable and thriving ACCO sector.
Social Innovation
- Partner with the Social Innovation Hub to design, pilot and scale self-determined initiatives.
- Embed lived experience into the heart of innovation and program design.
- Expand and evolve successful projects like Aboriginal Families Together (AFT).
- Build cultural innovation capabilities across Uniting, enabling teams to scale what works.
- Capture and share learnings from First Nations-led innovations to influence wider change.
Thought Leadership
- Co-create research projects that reshape narratives and policy thinking.
- Align our research and advocacy with self-determination and the strategic Impact Pillar.
- Translate insights into compelling thought leadership materials that influence sector-wide reform.
- Lead contributions to a landmark First Nations Impact Report, combining data and storytelling to measure progress and spark dialogue.
About you
This is a unique opportunity for a First Nations leader ready to drive systemic change from the inside out. You bring:
- Aboriginality – This is an identified role, open only to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants.
- Relevant qualifications – A degree or equivalent experience in a related field (e.g., social impact, public policy, community development, innovation).
- Demonstrated leadership in designing, delivering and scaling First Nations-led programs and partnerships.
- A strong track record of influencing within complex organisations, building cross-sector relationships, and navigating change.
- Deep understanding of self-determination, co-design and culturally grounded engagement practices.
- Emotional intelligence, cultural humility, and the ability to operate across different worldviews.
- Excellent communication skills – written, verbal and interpersonal.
- A current driver’s license and willingness to travel.
