About the Opportunity
This is a unique opportunity to play a leading role in strengthening relationships between Council and the local Aboriginal community, and to drive meaningful reconciliation outcomes at a community-wide level.
As the Aboriginal Liaison Officer, you will be at the forefront of delivering Council’s Reconciliation Action Plan, fostering respectful partnerships, and ensuring Aboriginal voices inform decision making, service design and community wellbeing initiatives. Working across the organisation and alongside community, you will lead culturally informed projects, celebrate Aboriginal history and culture, and support Council to deliver inclusive, responsive and respectful services.
This position offers the chance to make a genuine difference, influence organisational practice, and contribute to long term social change, while being supported by a committed leadership team and a collaborative Community Wellbeing and Partnerships environment.
What you will bring
Ideally the successful applicant will have the following:
- Demonstrated cultural knowledge and established connections with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, particularly within the local context
- Strong understanding of reconciliation, social justice principles and community development practice
- Proven experience leading and delivering community‑based projects, events and engagement initiatives
- Highly developed communication skills, with the ability to provide culturally informed advice and build trusted relationships with diverse stakeholders
- Strong organisational and reporting skills, including experience preparing plans, funding reports and corporate documentation
- Tertiary qualifications in Community Development, Community Engagement, Project Management (or similar) and/or substantial relevant experience
- Current driver’s licence, and the ability to obtain and maintain a satisfactory Police Check
This position is identified and has been established as a Special Measure under the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic).
In accordance with the Act, this role is open only to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. Confirmation of Aboriginality and/or Torres Strait Islander identity, including a Certificate of Aboriginality, will be required prior to appointment.
Salary and conditions
The position is classified within Band 6 of Council’s Current Enterprise Agreement ranging from $93,602 to $101,911 per annum plus statutory superannuation.
