About the role
As a Natural Areas Officer, you will play a key role in supporting biodiversity conservation, environmental assessment, monitoring programs, and ecological advice across Council operations and community-facing projects.
A key aspect of the role includes supporting management of sensitive ecological sites such as the Ku-ring-gai Flying Fox Reserve, including monitoring data, population records, and liaison with relevant stakeholders.
Your dutieswill include, but are not limited to:
- Prepare and review environmental assessments and provide technical input into Council planning and infrastructure projects
- Deliver ecological advice, monitoring, and reporting to support biodiversity conservation and natural area management
- Develop and manage fauna monitoring programs and maintain biodiversity and environmental data systems
- Provide environmental advice for works and activities in Council bushland, including external bookings and approvals
- Contribute to environmental education, community engagement, and stakeholder liaison across projects and programs
- Support compliance with environmental legislation, prepare grant applications, and assist in reporting on environmental performance
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
- Tertiary qualifications in ecology, environmental science, natural resource management (or equivalent experience), and a current Class C driver’s licence
- Experience preparing and reviewing environmental assessments within a local government or similar regulatory context
- Strong understanding of environmental and planning legislation and its application to operational and planning decisions
- Experience in threatened species assessment, ecological monitoring, and environmental data collection, management, and analysis
- Proven ability to provide technical environmental advice and contribute to multi-disciplinary projects and research
- Strong communication, stakeholder engagement, and report writing skills, including delivering presentations and community education programs
