- Hybrid working arrangements available, with at least 1 week per month in Walgett, 2 weeks preferred
- $83,000 to $91,000 plus super, with higher remuneration negotiable for an exceptional candidate
- 5 weeks annual leave, plus daily flex time accrual and opportunities for training and growth
- Play a key role in improving internal hire rates, cost recovery and commercial performance across Council
About the role:This is not your ordinary local government finance role.
Walgett Shire Council is looking for a commercially minded accountant who wants to do more than prepare reports and process transactions. This is a role for someone who wants to work closely with operational leaders, influence real decisions, and help improve the financial sustainability of a diverse rural council.
The Commercial Accountant plays an important role in helping Council get the best possible return from internal hire rates, cost recovery models, fees and charges, commercial ventures and grant-funded activity. You will provide commercially focused financial analysis, advice and reporting that supports better decision making across the organisation.
You will work with managers to review pricing structures, better understand the true cost of service delivery, identify revenue improvement opportunities, support business cases and strengthen commercial outcomes. You will also play a key role in Council’s grant financial management, including financial set up, claims, reconciliations and acquittals.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys variety, likes partnering with operational areas, and wants to see their work make a practical difference.
About you:You are commercially astute, technically strong and confident working with people across an organisation.
You can look beyond the numbers, identify issues and opportunities, and provide practical advice that helps managers make better decisions. You are comfortable working in a hands-on environment and understand that strong financial outcomes come from partnering with the business, rather than sitting apart from it.
To be successful in this role, you will ideally bring:
- experience in commercial, management or business partnering style accounting roles
- strong capability in financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting and management reporting
- experience with pricing, cost recovery, internal charging models or commercial performance analysis
- the ability to prepare business cases, financial models and clear, practical recommendations
- strong interpersonal skills and the confidence to work with non-finance stakeholders
- experience in grant financial management, including claims, reconciliations and acquittals
Experience in Civica Authority is highly regarded.
Local government experience will be well regarded, but is not essential. We are open to candidates from other sectors who can demonstrate strong commercial capability, sound judgement and the ability to work in a practical, service focused environment.
We recognise that strong candidates may not meet every requirement listed. If you can demonstrate relevant capability, sound judgement and the ability to add value in the role, we encourage you to apply.
