The Gene Technology and Biosafety Officer (GTBO) is a pivotal role within the University’s Office of Research Ethics and Integrity. You will act as the University's Biological Safety Officer, providing senior-level advice, training and oversight to support compliance with complex and evolving regulatory frameworks. In this role you will support the delivery of a robust Biorisk Management Program and contribute to the safety and integrity of cutting-edge research across the institution.
Your responsibilities will include:
Provide Expert Advice: Offer guidance on microbiological safety as the University's Biological Safety Officer, supporting biorisk assessment and control.
Manage Regulatory Compliance: Implement and improve processes to prevent non-compliance, liaising with government departments, coordinating and attending external audits.
Investigate and Report: Review biological incidents, communicate learnings, and prepare reports for the Institutional Biosafety Committee and senior management.
Drive Continuous Improvement: Identify trends and risks, supporting the evolution of the Biorisk Management Program.
You may be a great fit if you have:
A degree in a biological science discipline and extensive specialist experience
Strong knowledge of gene technology, biosafety and biosecurity regulations
A track record of success in research compliance roles, preferably in a university or research environment
The ability to work independently and collaboratively, handling complex regulatory information with maturity and discretion
Excellent communication skills and experience delivering training to a diverse audience
You may also have:
Experience engaging with regulators and facilitating audits or inspections
The ability to review incidents and identify performance trends
Strong organisational and time management skills, with a proactive and detail-oriented mindset
