Diverse policy work that shapes the future of planning in WA
Are you passionate about planning and ready to make a meaningful impact across Western Australia’s Local Government sector?
WALGA is seeking a Policy Advisor Planning to join our Planning and Building Policy Team for a 6-month fixed-term contract, covering parental leave. This is a unique opportunity to work alongside experienced policy professionals, contribute to sector-wide initiatives, and help shape the future of urban and regional planning in WA.
In this role, you’ll tackle a range of planning issues, from land use and development to legislative reform. You’ll provide high-quality advice, represent Local Government interests, and coordinate engagement through events and workshops. Whether you're refining policy positions, advocating for funding, or supporting WA’s 139 Member Councils, your work will help deliver better planning outcomes for communities across the state
This role is ideal for someone currently working in Local or State Government seeking a secondment, someone looking to gain experience in the Local Government sector, or a visa holder with work limitations seeking meaningful short-term professional experience.
What would a typical week look like?
You’ll be part of a collaborative, fast-paced team working on planning issues that matter. One day you might be analysing legislation and drafting a submission, the next, coordinating a workshop or representing WALGA on a working group. You’ll engage with stakeholders, contribute to sector-wide initiatives, and help build Local Government planning capacity.
This role offers variety, challenge, and the chance to learn from experienced policy professionals, so you’ll be involved in every step, not just a cog in the wheel.
Enough about us let's talk about you!
You’re a curious and solutions-focused professional with a passion for planning and policy. You thrive in a fast-paced environment, enjoy working collaboratively, and are ready to jump into a team where your ideas and insights will be valued.
To be successful, you’ll bring:
• Strong knowledge of planning legislation and urban development principles.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
• Experience in policy development, research, and analysis.
• A proactive mindset and the ability to manage competing priorities.
While prior experience in Local Government or a member-based organisation is advantageous, it is not essential. At WALGA, we value curiosity and welcome candidates who are eager to learn and explore how the Local Government policy landscape operates.
