The Opportunity

You'll be part of a dynamic, community‑focused team that helps people across Wollongong connect with stories, learning, creativity and each other. As a Library Assistant, you'll play an important role supporting our libraries and the communities they serve.
This casual opportunity gives you variety, flexibility, and the chance to learn new systems and skills. You'll be physically capable of performing hands‑on tasks, able to work weekends or evenings as required and able to work across any of our library locations. Salary $37.56 per hour plus 25% casual loading and superannuation.
We are looking for casual staff who are flexible with their working hours, able to work at any of our libraries and who can be called upon at short notice.
Our library opening hours are between 8.30 am to 8.30 pm. Staff may be required to work a minimum 3 hour shift up to 7 hours per day depending on need. All shifts would be face to face customer service.
Under Part 2, Section 6 of the Child Protection (Working With Children) Act 2012, this position has been designated as requiring a paid Working With Children Check.

What you will be doing
Building confidence working across multiple branches, you'll learn library systems and develop strong customer service capability while supporting Wollongong City Libraries' vision of an informed, engaged, creative and connected community. In this role, you will:
- Provide friendly, face‑to‑face support to customers across any of our library locations.
- Assist people to find information, access resources, and use technology such as public PCs, printers, devices and online services.
- Carry out circulation tasks including loans, returns, reservations, and account assistance.
- Promote programs, events, and library services across different locations.
- Contribute to the smooth running of each library-helping with shelving, tidying, displays, and general presentation of spaces.
- Learn and use a range of library systems and digital tools to support customers.
- Apply safe work practices, follow procedures, and support a respectful, inclusive environment for everyone.
About you
You're someone who thrives in a customer‑focused environment and enjoys helping people. You bring:
- Library knowledge/experience/training or a High School Certificate or a Record of School Achievement or equivalent
- Face‑to‑face customer service experience with the confidence interacting with a wide range of customers.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- The ability to learn new systems quickly and use technology comfortably.
- Good organisation and the ability to prioritise tasks, especially when things get busy.
- You take initiative, you notice what needs doing and step in without being asked.
- Sound WHS awareness and a commitment to creating safe, accessible spaces.

- Flexibility to work across our seven library locations, including weekends and evenings.
- You'll be physically capable of performing hands‑on tasks.
- If you're over 18, you'll be willing to obtain or will hold a valid Working With Children Check.
