Council are seeking a motivated, self-driven individual with experience in accounts receivable and/or debt recovery. You should have the ability to work to a schedule as the nature of this work is highly structured. You will need to have good communication skills as you will be required to liaise not only with ratepayers and customers but also with other staff members at Council.
This role is an unusual one in that we are looking for someone to work with ratepayers to find realistic payment arrangements for property related debts, eg: rates and water. We also require an individual who can assist with revenue collection for the commercial operations of Council, such as our contractual arrangements connected to leases.
To be successful you will need to be able to autonomously read, understand and implement Council's Hardship and Pensioner Policy.
Previous experience in debt recovery would be beneficial but not essential. If you can demonstrate established organisation & communication skills, this combined with experience in Accounts Receivable would make you a suitable applicant.
The Finance Officer is responsible for:
- Ensuring all recovery actions strictly comply with the Local Government Act 1993 and Council's Debt Recovery Policies.
- Negotiating, formalising and monitoring realistic payment arrangements for ratepayers.
- Assess and process applications under Council's Financial Hardship Assistance Policy with empathy, fairness and strict confidentiality.
- Prepare monthly debtor reports, write off recommendations and reconciliations for management.
- Monitor and initiate recovery actions for outstanding rates, water charges, and sundry debtors
- Coordinate legal proceedings with an external agency
TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL NEED
- Experience and/or qualifications, experience in accounts receivable
- The ability to process simple reconciliations
- Sound attention to detail with the ability to accurately review and assess information
- Excellent verbal & written communication skills
- Ability to interpret & implement council policies in relation to debt recovery
- Ability to schedule & adhere to timelines that are essential to sound debt recovery processes
- NSW Driver Licence

Salary range: Grade 11 - $70,420.20 - 76,196.37 per annum plus 12% superannuation for a 35-hour work week. Salary may be negotiated based on skills, experience and your value to our organisation.
