Works General Hand (Ref: 1277, 1281 & 1287)
About the position:
As a Works General Hand, you’ll play a hands-on role in keeping the City of Greater Geraldton moving. This is an active, outdoor position focused primarily on road maintenance and pothole repairs, helping to keep local streets safe and well maintained for the community.
Working as part of a skilled team and under general direction, you’ll carry out practical maintenance tasks across roads and drainage assets, ensuring work is delivered on time, within budget, and to the required safety and quality standards. You’ll follow all relevant legislation, Australian Standards, and City policies and procedures while taking pride in real, visible results at the end of the day.
This role suits someone who enjoys physical work, being outdoors, and making a tangible difference in their community. Plus, you’ll benefit from a 9-day fortnight, with every second Friday off giving you more time to recharge, explore, or pursue what matters to you.
Key accountabilities:
- Maintain the City’s sealed roads and drainage systems assets through undertaking various maintenance activities.
- Perform routine manual labour duties, including but not limited to shovelling, cutting and picking of asphalt, filling of potholes, and trench restoration.
- General operation of plant, in a competent and safe manner including skid steer, loader and other machinery as required.

Position requirements:
We’re looking for a motivated, safety‑focused person who enjoys hands‑on, outdoor work and is keen to build practical skills.
Ideally, you’ll hold an HR licence and have experience safely operating plant and equipment used in road and drainage maintenance. Experience with asphalt works and chip sealing will be highly regarded.
Applicants with
limited experience are encouraged to apply training and support will be provided for the right candidate with a strong work ethic and willingness to learn.
Completion of a pre-employment medical including alcohol and other substances testing is required of all positions at the City.
Remuneration and benefits:
A salary starting from $76,072 per annum or $38.4981 per hour will be offered dependent on knowledge, skills, experience and qualifications.
